Cone, Gordon C.

1807–1882

Born on 10 September 1807 at Wilbraham, Massachusetts, Gordon C. Cone was one of seven children born to Osias and Lavina (Carpenter) Cone.

In 1832, Gordon married Louisa Anderson, a native of Braintree, Massachusetts. They moved to Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1837 where their daughter, Fannie, was born. The couple had two children before Louisa’s death.

On 20 July 1843, at age thirty-five, Gordon married Mariam Wealthy Griswold at Waukesha. Gordon worked in the hardware business until 1849, when he traveled to California for a one-year stint in the mines. Gordon returned to Wisconsin, but moved to McGregor, Clayton County, Iowa in 1859, where he continued to work in the hardware business.

Gordon was elected County Treasurer for eight years in Wisconsin and “held other local offices of trust in McGregor” (Price, 973). Gordon passed away in 1882 at age seventy-five at McGregor, Iowa.
